About Microsoft ISA Server

Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration server (ISA) is the integrated edge security gateway that helps protect the Linde Group IT environment from Internet-based threats while providing our users with fast and secure remote access to applications and data.

By using caching technology that stores network data locally on the ISA server, this means that web clients can pull remote websites from the local ISA server instead of across the WAN, this can in turn save precious international bandwidth

System Recommendation

Hardware & Software :

Microsoft ISA 2004 SP2 or ISA 2006 standard license version .
Existing Additional Domain Controller with single LAN card running on Win2K or 2K3.
D: drive for holding ISA cache and to publish reports. (approx 30 GB required)
733 MHz or higher processor
512 MB or higher memory

Note :Microsoft ISA 2004 standard version license cost you around less than or equal to US $ 1000.At the time of writing this document ISA standard 2006 evaluation version with full features is available on internet for six month's time period .

ISA deployment architecture for BOC Asia

ISA deployment architecture for BOC Asia is based on the following requirements.

To keep control over users by, preventing them accessing UK/US proxy directly .These controls could be implemented for different reasons; for example to prevent users from downloading large volumes of data or monitoring / blocking user's access if they are visiting illegal/restricted sites.

To save bandwidth between the country to UK by enabling caching on a local ISA hard drive so that most frequently used web data can be retrieved locally from ISA server's cache.

Updating the Microsoft Windows operating system with new patches on corporate computers from Microsoft Update can use a large portion of the available bandwidth. This problem is exacerbated in a low-bandwidth connection scenario but also can be an issue in higher bandwidth conditions as well. Updating with new patches is an important security function, and should be expedited. ISA Server 2004 SP2 or ISA 2006 provides the Microsoft Update caching feature that uses the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) caching feature to efficiently cache the updates, so that the ISA Server cache can serve the requests. Patches can be received from UK proxy once , and then can be applied to the corporate machines via local ISA cache. Since we already using Patchlink server for this purpose therefore this feature can be used as a second line of defence for applying security patches or to cover those corporate machines that do not have Patchlink agent installed by mistake.

ISA can be configured with a built-in Single Network Adaptor template which is the simplest one and fulfils our mentioned requirements.

A special web page has been developed which users can be directed at when they violate the BOC IM User Security policy. This page describes the BOC IM User policy and can be used to remind users of the consequences of breaking the policy. A copy of this page can be found at http://security.boc.com/isa_policy/

Configuration Detail

ISA Configuration comprises of two levels.

Active Directory Additional Domain Controller level – what about users with NT domains?
ISA Server level

Configuration in Active Directory Additional Domain Controller

Created two security groups as

Authorized Internet Users-Full Access

Member of this group will have full access with no restriction

Authorized Internet Users-Limited Access

Member of this group will have limited access

The following setting will be done at GPO level, (fwpkbho001 will be replaced with your ISA server's hostname) This setting will redirect internet explorer's client LAN settings to your local ISA proxy server.

User Configuration\Windows Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\Connection\Proxy Settings

If the BITS feature in ISA is enabled then the following setting will be required in the GPO:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Configure Automatic Updates

Configuration in ISA Server

Installation

Install ISA server with its default installation wizard.

Click on "Single Network Adaptor" template wizard as shown in right pane and complete this wizard.

Configure Firewall Rule

Mandatory System's Access

This is first rule establishing communication of ISA server with their member Domain Controllers and also allow remote access.

Block-Web Sites

This is second rule blocking restricted websites ,depends on which sites you want to block.

This rule also redirect restricted http requests to BOC IM Security Policy intranet site.

Block-FTP Sites.

This is third rule blocking all ftp sites for file download.

Allow-Full Access.

This rule belongs to Authorized Internet Users-Full Access security group since member of this group has no restriction.

Note : Last rule is default built-in system rule

Configure Web Chaining

Double click on Last Default rule as shown in the picture

In action menu select Redirecting them to a specified upstream server then click on Setting

Type here UK proxy address with port number as 80 in first two fields only.

Now select Upstream proxy server under Backup route sub menu and click on settings

Type here US proxy address with port number as 80 in first two fields only.

Configure Cache

Configure cache drive:

Click on cache as shown in left pane then select D: drive and type your desired capacity as shown 20480 MB (20 GB) in this picture and click OK then click on Apply.

Configure BITS cache rules:

If you want to use BITS feature then to enable BITS caching, open up the ISA Management MMC, expand the Configuration node and click on Cache. In the task bar on the right, click on "Create the Microsoft Update Cache Rule".

A wizard will start up. It is about as easy a wizard as you can get as all options are populated :)

The list of Microsoft Update URLs are also included.

Click Finish and then apply the change to the ISA server.

You now have a BITS caching rule configured and enabled!

Important : The Microsoft Update Cache Rule must remain first in the ordered list of cache rules as shown in both picture.

Report Configuration

It is recommended to configure a daily detail report and a monthly report under the Tasks menu showing in right pane.

You can configure your reports with different perspectives according to your requirement as shown in some sample reports below.

Each person brings his own set of customes, beliefs and perceptions to the project.

A team is a heterogeneous group with complementary rather than competing skills in the members.
It is a temporary alliance created for a specific purpose or objective.

BGP is a Path Vector Routing Protocol
The BGP AS-Path is a Loop Prevention Mechanism
When a BGP speaker receives a prefix that contains its own AS in the prefix's AS-path attribute, the BGP speaker should refuse to accept the prefix.

The Logic behind this is

If one's own AS number is in the AS-path of a prefix being received, that prefix must have already traversed the AS or was originated from the AS. This reflects a looping condition. Therefore the update should discarded.

By applyihg this rule, when TTL security states that an E-BGP speaker may be up to 2 hops away, it means that this remote BGP speaker may be up to the max hop count of 255-2, which equals 253 hos. This is how the neighbour ttl-security command operates.

By default, e-BGP packets are set with a TTL of 1. This can become a big issue in E-BGP peering.

Forming I-BGP Neighbor Relationship
